  1. oak is the best, but expensive.


  2. Most woodframe homes in USA use SPF lumber, this means spruce, pine, or fir. Manufactered wood boards and sheets are becoming more common, they are made from wood chips and glue.

  3. This will depend on what region of the country you are building in as different woods are available in various markets.  I prefer yellow pine for structual components as it offers strong rigid framing.  Stay away from OSB/Strand Board sheeting; I know it's claimed to be equal in structural ratings, but it's junk and really doesn't weather and hold up like actual plywoods. . . I personally won't work with it and don't feel the little savings is worth consideration.

  4. spruce for the studs and plates.....pine for the floor joist and rafters, headers,.....LVL's for load bearing beams, treated when in contact with masonry or exterior.....
