What kind of wood is the best heat insulator?

  2. I would think balsa would be quite good.

  4. Softwoods have a higher R-value (better insulators).

    If this is for home building, remember that metal is a GREAT conductor.

    Make sure that nails/screws don't conduct from the outside to inside, this can lead to much greater heat loss than the type of wood you use.
