What kind of work experience would be good for me to do over the summer?

I'm a second year university student, looking for work with the elderly over the summer (I currently volunteer at a club for the physically disabled elderly, but that's only once a month). I don't mind if it's paid or voluntary, I just don't know where to look.

  1. How about contacting some care homes or agencies that supply care homes and looking into being a care assistant? That could certainly help pay the rent/student loans.

Volunteering-wise you could try help the aged or age concern, see if they've got any projects going on that you could help out with.  If you go to www.do-it.org.uk you can search volunteering opportunities based on a category (you can put in elderly) andyour postcode.

    Good luck!

  2. IN many geriatric residences there are quite a few ways to get some training.  You might volunteer as a 'visitor'.  You might also look into other activities available at 'Nursing Homes'.  Driving, physical help with the elderly, food services (delivering the meal to the bed-ridden).  Try calling around to nursing facilities, geriatric care facilities, etc.  I think what you want to do is commendable!

  3. well, how about the crematorium?

  4. your best bet is an old peoples home. i think you probably have to be police checked though, unless you already have as you already work with the elderly.

try your local job centre,as you might even be able to get paid for it!

  5. Try checking with the club you currently volunteer at for referrals to other agencies. Check in the blue pages of your phone book, perhaps you can find local agencies that could point you in the right direction. Are there student resources available at your university? Local churches? Local senior centers are always looking for volunteers. Best of luck!
