  1. Used to be married to a cruise ship security officer, and on one of his ships, there were 33 different nationalities.

  2. Holland America highlights the fact that they have an Indonesian staff.  We were on the Maasdam last year and found this to be a problem - we had more than one communication issue in the dining room and lounge.

We were on the Radiance of the Seas in October, (I guess that's now "last year" too! - Happy New Year), and  the cruise director made it a point to let us know, more than once, that the crew came from 55 different countries!  We cruise about 2 -3 times a year and find this to be preferable.

Also of interest was the fact that the Radiance had five different crew dining rooms - each one for a different type of geographic cultural cooking!  I'm sorry that I don't recall more of the specifics to relate to you.

  3. On Costa Cruise lines I have heard that they are mostly Phillipino and Italian since its an Italian cruise ship but they have people from all different countries around the world and even the US and Canada and they have people from all parts so its a great variety. Also on some ships like the NCL Pride of Hawaii, they ahve to follow all of the rules and are limited to so many foreign workers and they all have to be american other then that number or they all might have to some have regulations if you are just doing the US like Hawaii and are not rotating through foreign waters.

  4. There seem to be lots of east European and former Soviet Bloc countries in the dining rooms. on HAL.   We had three Croatian waiters in a row.

Those people work like mad without much time off.  I don't begrudge them any tips they make.

The entertainment staff are largely  American or West European on many ships.

I have seen nationality listed on some websites and in books about cruising.

  5. On carnival cruise lines most of the workers are from all different countries but the workers are grouped together. (for instance all workers that work at the bars might be from bulgaria.)
