Question:

What kind of worms does my puppy have?

My puppy, I've had for about three weeks and adopted from the pound, pooped this morning and it had a live worm in it.

It was small and white. It's head had a hammer head shape; however, when it would stretch it would round out. I thought it had a little thread like look at the end, but when I looked at pictures of whipworms the head did not match. When moving it would get rounder then stretch out to a thin line. It was about eighth of an inch long and seemed to be not affected by being outside the body.

Does anyone know what kind of worm this is?

  1. what you are seeing is a tapeworm, dogs and cats get them from ingesting a flea-- a dewormer from the vet will take care of them. The eggs on these worms are so heavy that vet offices can have a hard time seeing them in a stool sample, yet if it is a puppy there could be other worms present so let your vet know what you see and also have the stool checked for other intestinal worms.

  2. If the worms look like moving grains of rice then it is tapeworms,  if it is longer white worm then it usually roundworms.  Either way get to the vet and make sure you get a worm-er that kills all four types of worms.

  3. Sounds like maybe your puppy has a tape worm. You need to make an appt. with your vet or the vet your humane society uses and have your puppy wormed. Don't try and guess what type it is, get a bowel sample with a worm in it and take it to your vet and then they can pescribe the best worm medication for your puppy.

  4. i don't know, but you could take it to a vet and they could tell you.

  5. bring him to the vet so he can get medication and deworming

  6. Sounds like roundworms. They are the most common type of intestinal worms. They look kind of like spaghetti, while tapeworms look more like little grains of rice.

Make sure you buy your dewormer from a vet, rather than the pet store. Pet store dewormers can be very dangerous, but for the most part they do absolutely nothing. Including actually taking care of the wormies!

  7. sounds like roundworms or tapeworms (either one can kill the puppy)...take the pup along with a f***s sample to the vet and they will provide you with the medication to take care of them...also they can check to see if the pup has any other type of internal parasites..

  8. Not sure, but if you take a sample of the dog's stool to your regular vet, they will test it & give you the correct dewormer.   Some worms stay attached inside the intestines, and only give off microscopic eggs into the stool.   Your dog may have other types of worms in addition to the one live worm that you saw.   To be sure the dog is dewormed for all parasites, the fecal test at the vet is the best thing to have done.  Good luck.
