  1. you should try what the army does...sprint a lap...then jog and lap...then walk a lap...then sprints two laps...then jog two laps...then walk two laps...and work you way up to 4 and then back down...it hurts alot but if continously done it will affect both endurance and speed


  2. try running a 5:00 mile pace at a shorter interval like 800m or 1200m. do repeats with those.

    on days that you do different workouts, maybe also try doing mile repeats to get a feel for what it's like to do a mile at a quick pace.

  3. show up every day to practice,Run on some sundays, Chose longer options.That's how my friend went from 5:20 mile to 4:42
