Question:

What kinda beetle is this (Iowa)?

was wondering what kind of beetle this is--

kinda hard to see.. but web cam isn't that great, its got two large pincers, is about 3-3.5 cm long and a glossy brown color..

  1. Yep it looks like a stag beetle, somewhat like the common stag beetle shown here

    They lay their eggs in certain kinds of rotting wood, and their larvae eat as substrate eaters. Adults will do fine on fresh peaches, or fruits that are cut open, since they feed on sap. Ground beetles do not have such large jaws, since they only need small pinching ones to grasp prey. Stags battle with them.


  2. Looks to be a ground beetle.  It would be difficult to attempt a more accuate identification without a better picture.
