  1. what type?? cruiser..    Yam Virago   250/550

                                       Suzi Savage 650

but I would buy secondhand & ride it for 6 months..

you may change your mind on what type of bike you want & switch to a sports bike..   & as a learner you may throw it down the road..  most new riders do at some stage,,  & its better to throw the cheap second hand one away than a nice new one..

  2. Ducati Monster 620

  3. First, please take an MSF course, ok? With that out of the way...

I'd stay away from the sportbike style as your first ride... very expensive if you drop one.

Dual-purpose bikes are the ones I recommend for average to taller beginning riders like you. They're narrow through the middle and have wide bars so they feel light and easy to ride, as you'd know from riding dirt bikes.

Also check out the Supermoto style bikes - big fun and very agile.

A standard like a Triumph Bonneville would work and look cool too if you're into the retro idea.

Someone else mentioned a Ducati Monster - very nice, very stylish, very fun, not super-expensive, but I'd recommend it when you have more experience.

  4. Find a used:

    Kawasaki Ninja 250 or 500R

    Suzuki GS500F

    Vulcan 500

    Honda Shadow 500

these are all good bikes to own, last a long time, not too powerful, for someone your age, and easy to control.

Once you are older (hint past 25) your insurance rates will drop, and you can get the bike you really want.

  5. buy a USED 500 to 650 type bike, i would recomend a yamaha 650 custom type bike. Also dont spend alot on this bike as you will grow out of it. Any smaller and it wont be safe on higher speed roads, andy larger and you wont learn how to ride as easy and risk would be higher. If you buy new, your just throwing money away. wait until your riding 1 to 2 years, then buy new.

  6. check out the Yamaha V-star 650cc.  It is a better fit than the rest for a smaller person and the seat is narrower at the front.  Feels a lot more comfortable and the balance is great!

  7. If you are looking for a cruiser I would go with

Yamaha XV535, Suzuki LS650, Honda VT600 shadow, Kawasaki Vulcan EN500. Street/ Sport I would go with Suzuki GS500, Kawasaki EX500.  Stay away from EX250s and anything Ducati..........time bombs! Try www.wowmotorcycles.com great source for pictures and pricing. Even better if you live in Atlanta!!!
