  1. It is your first time? Sweet! as for your question, sweats, even with layers underneath, might keep you warm, but you will get wet, then the wet clothes will get cold, then you will be wet and cold. :(  So, wear waterproof clothes. Wear your regular winter coat, and snowpants. If you don't have snowpants, then wear pants that are waterproof. Good Luck!

  2. You definitely need your outermost layer to be waterproof especially if it's your first time up!  Snowboarding takes a few days to get the hang of and until you get to that point you will spend some quality time on the snow.

There are three layer types that you want to wear.

Inner layer - long underwear that is long sleeved and to your ankles.

Middle layer - this is for warmth, over your long johns.  Fleece is ideal for this layer, or wool.  You could wear a sweatshirt but it's not the best thing.  Depending how cold it is I'll wear a long sleeved shirt and a fleece jacket or just one or the other.

Outer layer - waterproof jacket and pants.  If you don't own anything suitable some mountains rent them.

Avoid wearing cotton whenever possible because when it gets wet it is heavy and doesn't keep you warm at all.

Throw on a hat and gloves and you should be ready to go!!

  3. wear waterproof stuff like a ski jacket and snowboard pants. Sweats, jeans, sweatshirts will get wet. You should wear a shirt, sweats, a sweater, track pants, a snowboarding jacket and snowboarding or waterproof pants.

Dont wear jeans. I talked to this guy briefly at a resort this one time and he couldnt buckle his ski boots because of his jeans.

  4. I agree with the earlier replies, avoid cotton and go for layering. If its your first time, you will get hot and work up a sweat, if your a seasoned boarder, you will get hot and work up a sweat. Moisture, whether it comes from sweat or snow doesnt feel much good when you cool down, like sitting on a chair lift for 10 minutes with a minus15 degree windchill. The things that will make you feel cold the most is the wind and moisture when it cools and is touching your body.

I've boarded for a few years now in various conditions from sunny 5 degree days to blizzardy minus 30. If you wear layer you can adjust to the conditions and how hot or cold you feel. I was boarding in Nagano, Japan last week and only had a set of athletic/compression Skins on under a waterproof shell and pants but still carried a mid layer in my back pack when things cooled down. (which was just a fleecy jumper)

If you've got the money and think you're going to do it more often, invest in some proper snow gear like a good lightweaght water proof shell. You could use it for other outdoor / in the rain type activities.

and one more thing, you lose a lot of heat through your head so a beanie or hat makes a huge difference.

    have fun.

  5. Since it's your first time you will probably be falling down quite a bit and a waterproof/snow pants is probably the best. The sweats will get wet and eventually your jeans. It's not going to be confortable for you. You might want to have like a light waterproof jacket on top of your sweatshirt just until you get a hang of it (boarding) you know for the same reason... you don't want it to get your sweatshirt wet. Hope you have fun boarding. =D
