I am fishing in Sarasota Bay, it has snook, red fish, and multiple varities of snapper. Nothing large probably only up to 20 inches. I am wondering what kind of hook should I use? Brand, Size, and other info are appreciated. I just started to fish again and need some help.

  1. I like the Gamakatsu and owner brand of hooks. Super sharp, easy to get a hook set and super strong.Good luck on your fishing this year!

  2. eagle claw size 4

  3. I fish a bit south of you often in Estero Bay for same species. I do well with #1 Owner hook using live shrimp for bait. Mangrove snapper have really been hot lately. Thing is, recently passed Fl. law says we have to use circle hooks when fishing for these species in Gulf waters with live bait. Owner does make circles, I've been using the Mutu Light Circle. Don't set the hook on fish when using circles. Lift up when fish takes bait to tighten line, the hook will set itself. Check out the Chevy Fl. Fishing report on SUN at 7PM Thur. for fishing report in your area. Hope this helps a bit to get you started.

  4. You should use Eagle's Claw hooks, Lazer Sharp brand.

They are very sharp. If you are using live bait I recomend circle hooks because you dont have to set the hook. When the fish bites you only have to reel. You should use a 1/0 or a 2/0 size hook depending on the size of the bait and fish you want to catch.

  5. For brand of hook ~ personal preference be Gamakatsu. "Tight Lines and Fish On" ;)... < ' ( (( > <

  6. Go with Eagle Claw they are cheap and reliable, and then get one size 6 and thats all you need. Good luck.

  7. It greatly depends on how big the bait is, that you are using, if you are using live bait that use a circle hook, the hook you be about the same size a the fishes' head, hook it through the area between the anal fin and the tail, or you can hook the trough the lips make sure to be careful not to hook it beyond the mouth if you hook it to far you me kill the fish. On the other hand, if you are using dead bait such a shrimp, then use a bait holder hook, (the hook with a little barbs along the shank of the hook, and if you are using live shrimp than don't use a bait holder hook) use a 1# to 2# size hook. I find that a good cheep strong hook is eagle claw, but if you want a rather pricey, super strong hook hook than i would use a owner brand hook.

As the other answerer said watch the Chevy Florida fishing report that 7:00 on sun sports, it tells you all the hot spots for your area, you can also go the web site to get the same info.
