Question:

What kinda of wasp is this?

it was about 3 inches long. fat. black and yellow like a wasp. big long black wings. huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge freakin stinger. like an inch long. it was gross! i killed it cuz it looked dangerous. umm....he had antennaes and 3 legs on each side. its not a golden digger wasp. i looked thru google and couldnt find it. oh and i found him crawling in the grass in my front yard.

  1. it's a cicada killer

    Don't bother them, or they will bite you. Otherwise they will leave you alone

  3. I've never heard of it either,but if you see one again  maybe you should take a picture of it or capture it and then take a pic/vid or something.

    Sorry I know this isn't really giving you what you wanted, but I wanted my points! *lol*

  4. Here are some wasps with extra long ovipositors.  The stinger on a wasp is actually their ovipositor for laying eggs.  When they need to drill far into something like a tree, the ovipositor is extra long.  As you can see they are not all modified for stinging. I have only included the family ichneumonidae none of which sting.  There are other wasps with very long ovipositors in other families that also do not sting.
