  1. Mucking horse stalls, grooming, saddling, turning out horses

  2. They will ask you what experience you have with horses.  Judging by the fact that you are asking what sort of jobs there are to do I take it that you have not been around horses much!

Don't lie and say you have plenty of experience if you don't.  They will probably ask you to practically demonstrate some things and will catch you out this way.  It is also dangerous to pretend you know what you are doing around horses.

The kind of jobs you can expect to do are:

Mucking out stables - this will be done EVERY day and quite often you will have to remove the build up of poo during the day too.

    Feeding the horses

    Grooming the horses

Sweeping the yard - you will spend A LOT of time keeping the place looking tidy.

    Cleaning tack (saddles and bridles)

    Poo-picking in the fields

Removing dangerous plants from the fields

During the summer you will find yourself repainting fences and stables

    Mending broken fences

Working in a stable is only about 40% about riding the horses - the bulk of your time will be spent caring for them and keeping the place clean and tidy.

  3. They will mostly ask about your experience in working with horses. The most common jobs at a stable involve mucking out stalls, grooming horses, feeding horses, and exercising the horses. It sounds like you have no experience and, as another poster wrote, you should not lie about this. If you don't know what you are doing around 1200 pound animals it can be dangerous. They might only let you clean stalls at first since this does not involve contact with the horse when he is already out of the stall. Even cleaning stalls is done a certain way and certain barns do this differently so you'll need to get some training. Over time, they may let you learn to do the other tasks such as feeding and grooming. Depending on the type of stable and the services offered barn staff may exercise horses.

  4. relax...you will start at point zero.....so get ready to do the dirty work, and they

will teach you from there....ask for any shift and days off are not important.

  5. First and foremost, cleaning the stalls, so be prepared to get down and dirty. I took care of a small stable on my own one summer when I was only 8 and did a fine job. Not difficult, just hard work, but the fun part is exercising the horses, if that is part of their job description. You may also be asked to wash the horses, feed the horses and groom the horses.

  6. Dress prepared to start working because if they do hire you they will probably expect you to start that day depending on what time your interview is.  They probably ask what kind of experience you've had with horses.  Like Newmarketsalsa said be honest don't lie if you had none or little at all.  It doesn't necessarily mean they won't hire you if you don't have any or little experience.  But if they know when they hire you what your experience level is they can help train you so you do things the right way and safe guard you and the horses you will be working around so no one gets hurt.  Safety should be a number one priority when working with horses.  Different jobs at a stable include hotwalker, groom, exercise rider, assistant trainer.  If you have little experience with horses it would probably be best to start out as a hotwalker or a groom.  A hotwalker walks horses around the shed row or walking ring cooling horses down after they've been exercised.  A groom is usually responsible for grooming, feeding, cleaning stalls, cleaning tack, etc.

  7. bringing horses in and out, cleaing stalls, cleaning paddocks, using the tractor, sweeping the crossties, sweeping the aisle way, blowing the aisle, cleaning your locker, cleaning the barn office, bathing grooming tacking up horses, warming up/ cooling out horses..

    have i sadi enough
