  1. s***w that 6-11 servings things. Its a hoax put out by the American Dietetics Association (I used to work for them too).

6-11 servings is far too much grain.

Did you know that the food pyramid was designed during WWII as a guidleline for proper rationing? It has honestly no basis in today's society. People are no longer starving.

grains are what cause you to gain weight, along with fats. Carbohydrates are not that great. They give you energy, but you can derive energy from a few simple servings. You don't need 6-11. My estimate would be about 3-4 servings grains, 5 servings vegetables, 4 servings fruit (seperate from veggies of course because they have different nutrients). 2-3 servings legumes, nuts, beans, and seeds (i put these seperate from vegetables because they are different).

The best grains to eat are unrefined and unprocessed ones. Whole grain bread (not whole wheat...whole wheat is processed), quinoa (actually a seed), falafel and lots of sprouted things like sprouted lentils, sunflower sprouts, etc. you can sprout beans on your own just by soaking them covered in water. sprouting beans allows for you to eat them raw because it breaks down the protein inhibitors so that you can absorb the protein.

Buy whole wheat, un-fortified pasta. Look for pastas where the ingredients are literally just semolina or wheat flour. Substitute things like spinach wraps in the place of bread and make wraps with quinoa and beans in them with lettuce, tomatoes and a dressing of your choice.

  2. Stay away from any and all refined flours because these have little nutritional benefit and can put on pounds rather quickly.

For pasta, try some made of whole wheat, kamut, quinoa, or brown rice.

Always get whole grain or sprouted grain bread. I use Ezekiel bread which is all sprouted grain and actually contains no flour!!

Eat quinoa, brown rice, millet, buckwheat, barley, etc.

Remember that certain things like tortillas and crackers can also be counted as a grain product, so get healthier varieties of each.

  3. Whole grains only.  Grains do not make you lose weight though...reducing calories/exercising does.
