The Great Barrier Reef has a wide range of plant and animal life. It is made of coral which is an organism in itself. There are 15 species of seagrass. There are 400 species of algae.

There are large numbers of tropical fish with 1500 species. It is visited by 30 species of dolphin and whales. Dugongs and manatees live on the seagrass. There are 5000 species of mollusc. The crown-of-thorns starfish is a voracious eater of coral. There are 200 species of birds who visit it. The Great Barrier Reef is a Marine Park and rightly is on the World Heritage List.
