I want to be able to see patients and be involved in treatments. I didn't want to get an M.D. or D.O.though.

  1. A Ph.D is an academic degree and is not specifically related to clinical fields.  It may, however, be part of a clinician's knowledge base which they apply to their clinical setting in their specific field.   For example, many clinicians who perform research have PH.D.s in a field which adds information to their clinical knowledge and assist in guiding the research, or in developing therapies.

  2. In the UK, at least, the only non-clinically trained (i.e. without an MD) roles that involve patient contact include positions such as clinical biochemistry and pharmacy. However, a PhD not necessarily required for either of these, although the former would lead to plenty of research opportunities.
