  1. It depends on the family and sometimes the region. Our family in central Mexico eats turkey and either a smoked ham, called pierna navideña here(Christmas leg-LOL) or pork roast.  Fruit punch or compote is always served, made with red hibiscus flower ( called flor de Jamaica in Mexico), apples, crab apples, orange, prunes, sugar cane, cinnamon and piloncillo which sort of a hard, less purified brown sugar. It is often spiked with brandy or rum.

In some more homes people eat dried dried codfish prepared in a tomatoe, onion, olive and mild peper sauce. And some people eat romeritos. Romerito is a plant ( not to be confused with rosemary which is called romero in Spanish) that has a mildly succulent texture. It is prepared with mole, a traditional sauce, potatoes and dried shrimp.

Most people around here do not like to eat a lot of vegetables, but more and more you are seeing fresh vegetable or fruit salads on the Christmas table.

Actually the big feast is Christmas Eve when the family goes to church then back to the house from drinks and games and eventually the meal.

Mexico probably has the most elaborate and magnificent nativity scenes in the world. When they are set up weeks before Christmas Baby Jesus is not in his manger. But, at midnight between Christmas Eve and Christmas Day the children in the family take the Baby figure from where it has been carefully stored, wrap him in a blanket, sing him a lullaby and put him in the manger.

After than we open presents, have more drinks, and probably snack on the leftovers.

  6. In the states that border the USA we usually eat turkey made the American way… because this region is more influenced by the American culture, but we add some dishes that are traditional in other parts of Mexico, like tamales, romeritos with mole (its a typical dish made of romero grass and mole), bacalao (a fish dish originated in the Veracruz state and influenced by Spain cuisine), pozole (made with corn grains, pork, chicken and beef stew, red chiles), ...

We also eat "buñuelos" which is a dessert made only in this season, and "champurrado" which is a beverage made of chocolate, cinnamon and corn flour.

Ponche or fruit punch is another delicious beverage made only in this season.
