Question:

What kinds of freshwater fish are good to start with?

we are starting a freshwater aquarium and I'd like some opinions on the best kind of fish to start with. I'd like to have several different kinds, so they would have to get along together. I assume some bottom feeders would help keep things clean, and some others up near the top. I'm gonna start with a 10 gallon today and probably move everything into a 20 gallon that I have in a little bit. We were going to go look at the pet shop in a bit. Any ideas????

  1. black mollys

  2. Goldfish are messy and need alot of room. 20 gallonsa just to house one.

Loaches are scaleless fish and have little tolerance to impurities in the water. Wait til after the cycle and you are comfortable managing Ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite levels before you add any. They are a great addition to any tank though, jst not the best starter.

Cichilds are pretty advanced and very aggressive. Unless you are prepared to work with water chemistry, ALOT I'd wait on these colorful fellows. They will also attack nearly any other (species of) fish you put in the tank.

Good fish are small community fish. Mollies, platies and guppies are all livebearers and good starters. Also good to begin with are tetras (there are many kinds), and zebra danios.

Throw in some ghost shrimp for a little variety! They only cost about $.25 and will clean up any excess food in your tank.

  3. bettas. thats what i had but dont put a girl and boy betta together they will fight usually. thats what happened to mine they picked eachothers scales off and the girl betta killed the boy.

  4. I would start with your regulars. For instance, some goldfish, Bettas, cichlids, guppies, swordtail, loaches and tetras. Hope this helps!

  5. I like neon tetras too. And the fat gold fish are cute too. The one thing I learned though when I had a tank years ago was to get fish that are roughly the same size. Bigger fish will eat the smaller ones even if you feed them enough food.

  6. Goldfish :D they don't need heaters and don't need salts. Try getting Common Goldfish. Thats what I start out with :D...tehn 2 or 3 weeks , you can buy other type of Goldfish like Fantail , Blackmoors (My favorite) , Bubble eye......

    I hope I help :D

  7. livebearers are your best choice, they are very hardy.danios are also good.

  8. Barbs and tetra~

there are many different kinds and they are hardy enough to get your cycle going!

    Danios are a fave!
