What kinds of items have GST and PST in BC??

I just started a job at the dollar store and when we punch things in on the till we have to press one of three buttons for the items..1) no tax 2) just gst or 3) pst and gst..I'm a little confused and it would be impossible to memorize what every item falls under in the store..is there an easy way to categorize items into their proper tax group???

?  Your company is expected to teach you that.

Generally, everything is GST taxable except basic food items.  I don't think anything in a dollar store applies for that exempton.

For PST, books and children's clothing are the only exemptions I can think of.

But really, nobody is expected to know that to start.  The company should teach you that before even thinking of leaving you on the till alone.
