Question:

What kinds of stones are these?

I'm starting a small jewelry "business" for myself while I'm at college, just for some extra cash. My brother gave me his rock collection a while ago, but I have no idea what kind of stones these are:

The earrings (A) are quartz, I believe. Also, I'm pretty sure B is hematite. Can anyone else identify the others? Also, are there any really good sites on the web where I can find an easy way to determine what kind rocks I have? I'm thinking something with pictures and reliable to someone who is brand new at categorizing rocks. Thanks!

  1. You are correct about B.

Be aware that ID'ing rocks and minerals from pictures is very hard, so I may not be correct.

Also, rocks and minerals are not the same thing.

    C) Looks like quartz with perhaps some rose quarts inclusions or potassium feldspar ones.

    D) I cannot tell due to the glare. Perhaps tiger iron, agate, or a jasper.

    E) Looks like blue quartz or a very blue piece of sodalite

    F) Unakite

G- M) These all look to be some sort of jasper or other types of microcrystalline quartz. A few of the colors look artificial.

If you are at college, I bet there is an Earth Sciences department who could help you much more than a glared pictured shown to people on the Internet.

***Anything artificially colored is most likely some sort of microcrystalline quartz. You can try webmineral.com or just web search for mineral and rock identification.
