Question:

What kinds of things can we do to lower the impact of high gas prices on our wallets?

Congress asked the big 5 oil tycoons if they would consider lowering the price of gas because they made billions of dollars in profits and that money could be used to help consumers. There was nothing but silence from the big 5. So what are some ideas on how to curb our consumption and take a bite out of oil?

  1. Keep your vehicle in tune

Consolidate your smaller trips into one large one if possible

Drive your vehicle during less busy times of the day

Drive with a light right foot.

Walk, bicycle, or carpool whenever possible

  2. Stop blaming people for our problems!

Look around you, what do you see? Waste.

When you are sitting in the drive thru at the bank, waiting for 15 minutes before your turn, what is your car doing? Idling.

When it is cold in the morning what do you do with your car? Idle it to make it warm.

When you just run in the store for a minute, the car is idle!

If we all made changes in our own personal lives, everyone of us, we would save millions of gallons of gas. It is unnecessary to idle cars and burn gas at 0MPG. It lessens the life of your car, increases emissions, and make a bigger demand for gas.

The bigger the demand, the higher the prices! Buy oil that you can change every 35,000 miles. Changing your oil every 3,000 uses unnecessary oil and also adds to the demand.

Electric at your home uses oil, or coal in many electric power plants for burning or transportation. Unplug all your electronic when you're not using them and you will save a tremendous amount of energy. Yes electronics use power when turned off, some use a lot of wasteful power.

  3. Drive less and buy a fuel-efficient car.

I don't think that the big 5 can do anything to lower the prices.  Supply is restricted, and lowering prices will cause a shortage.

  4. Stop buying that cup of coffee or bagel in the morning and take it from home.. Bring lunch to work.

Small steps is all it takes.

  5. Simple, use less gas.

  6. Remove all the extra junk in your vehicle, remove air catching exterior accesories, air up your tires, go slow

  7. I noticed a big difference in my fuel consumption just by driving the speed limit.  Most people drive any where from 5-20 mph over the speed limit on a regular basis.  For one month I drove the speed limit in town and out of town and I saved about 1/3.  Now I always drive the speed limit and save that gas.  I also keep my car maintenance up to date.  The cars exhaust system is a big one on gas too. Keep your exist system working and you won't burn extra fuel.

  8. Driving slower makes a huge difference....less wind resistance.  Get rid of jack-rabbit starts.  Properly inflate tires (or even slightly over).

A few years ago you would have never caught me saying this:  I wouldn't mind the Fed. lowering the speed limit back down to 55.

  9. well...as a society, if we all instead of going buying it from many different companies, buy it from only one of the smaller companies (say...pick shell), then the rest of the companies would lose money.  We would still have gas, but with fewer business, the larger companies would have to lower their prices.

  10. drive less, or drive a more fuel efficient vehicle. The government has NO place to tell companies how to price their products. Government needs to stay OUT of the private sector.
