What kinds of things should we put in a doggie first aid kit?

we will be traveling this weekend and i want to make a simple kit in case something happens so we can treat our dogs (if we can't get to a vet immediately). i have never made one up before. we will be in the city but staying at an rv park at the edge of it. we will also have a human first aid kit in the car.

here are links to pics of the dogs. one is 65 lbs and the other is 50-55 lbs, if that matters.

  1. aww what cuties!

    umm lets see.

    vet's phone number,

dog's microchip # (if he has one)

    scissors

    gauze

    peroxide

    cotton balls

    neosporin

    small food packets (dog food)

    tweezers.

i would also suggest learning the dog version of CPR in case one of them chokes!

  2. I keep on hand:

copies of their records (in case anything did happen that warranted a visit to another vet)

The phone number for poison control

If they're microchipped, I'd have that info as well, etc.

    triple antibiotic ointment (like Neosporin)

    thermometer

    styptic powder

    betadine or nolvasan solution

    rubbing alcohol

    4x4 gauze

    sterile gauze pads

    skin glue

    bandage rolls

    medical tape

    vet wrap

    eye wash

    sterile eye lube

    Benadryl (1mg per pound)

    hydrogen peroxide

    activated charcoal

    extra blanket(s)

    hot/cold pack

    q-tips

ear cleanser + meds (I have a Cocker Spaniel, prone to ear infections, who would live in the water if she could)

    current meds

much of which is probably already in your first aid kit!

    have fun!

  3. a bag of karo syrup for constipation, Cloth Wrap for wounds, St. Johns/Josephs (I forgot) baby aspirins *will help if the dog has a injury, bottled water, iodine, neosporin *cuts and eye damage, flea/tick shampoo just in case the dog gets into some fleas or ticks, and a list of vets that are of that area and their addies.

This is just the basics what we bring with us but we also include cold packs, blankets, towels, and a bottle and syringe of pinicillin. * We keep that handy if the dog had something seriously hurting her/him.
