  1. Half the fun of Venice is just wandering around the city admiring the architecture , the gondolas, and canals. St Mark's Square is the biggest attraction with the basilica, the tower, the clock tower, and the Doge's Palace. Take the tour of the palace and walk across the Bridge of Sighs into the prison. Quadri, Florians and the other cafes are expensive, but nice for a break. There are art galleries & museums like the Accademia, the Correr, and the Guggenheim. The boat to see the glass making at Murano is nice, but I like going to Burano even better.

Special events depend on when you're in Venice. The next big one coming up is the Heineken Jammin Festival for three days in June. Then there's Il Redentore in July; it's a celebration of Venice surviving the plague and includes a spectacular fireworks display over the lagoon. The Festival of La Salute in November also celebrates surviving the plague a second time it hit the city. Carnevale is early in the year. There are lots of regattas throughout the year; one of the biggest is the historic regatta on the 1st Sunday in September. The Biennale is held every other year - next year for that. The Venice Film Festival in August/September is a big event. Saint Mark's Day is another important event. There are lots of others.

  2. I think the most obvious place is the San Marco's Palace.
