What kinds of vegetables grow the best in an acidic, clay-like soil?

Not very many vegetables will grow well in heavy clay but what will grow in acid soil depends on the actual pH level.  Ideal for most vegetables is 6.0 to 7.0 pH, which is slightly acid.  Moderately acid, 5.5 to 60 will support most veggies but tomatoes and peppers could show calcium deficiency symptoms.  Potatoes and blueberries are about the only things that like like it at less than 5.0 and not much of anything will grow below 4.5.  You can amend your soil with compost, vermiculite, and lime without too much expense.
