  1. many of the better name brands have models that you can manually flip open with a thumb stud

several also have an "assisted opening" feature where you start the blade moving and it has a spring assist - Kershaw "Onion" is a good one. these are not considered switchblades and are legal most places (there are a few places that would consider a plastic spoon an illegal weapon - Kalfornia, Jersey, DC, NY, etc) - also just because its legal doesn't mean some police departments won't confiscate it and try to prosecute you

Personally I carry a Columbia River Knife and Tool (CRKT) M-16 - good steel, easy to open, very tough

It really depends on what you want and what you want it for

a heavy tactical folding knife is not what you want if you plan on using it to clean or fillet fish

  2. For practicality, get a Leatherman or any multitool. For just simple tasks, a 3 1/2 in. folding blade with a lock will work great. Winchester makes some good knives. My pocket knife survived a trip into a fire (please don't ask), but BUCK are good too. I think switchblades are illegal almost everywhere, so be careful.

  3. Get a Gerber ... I've owned several brands and now I only buy Gerber

  4. Look into gerber or buck they both make really good knives that are extremely versatile. As to one that flips open cause its cool it may not be legal to have other than as a collectible so you should check into that before you get a knife.

  5. NO Buck knives are not good!  They are a starter model (and a cheap one at that).

I recommend a Knives of Alaska, Hunter or Trekker series if you want a fixed blade.  They have high quality folders too.  Their knives are made of D2 steel which is super sharp and stays sharp for a very long time.

SOG Seal Pup is also a good fixed blade.  Check out tactical knives - made for heavy use.

I'm a fan of the Leatherman Wave II, although I'm waiting for the SOG Powercut to be released shortly - the cutters would be more useful for me than the pliers are on the Wave.

  6. get a fold out kershaw. they arnt for outdoor stuff. they are for self defense but they are super sharp. i mean like you can just slide your finger over it lightly and it will be cut nice and smooth. they are expensive though.

  7. Buck's are the best - made in the good old USA
