Question:

What known animals exist in the wild, but have no specimens in captivity? I know the iriomote cat is one.?

  1. The majority of animals.  Only a few are kept in captivity.  There are something like 400 species of shark.  You rarely see more than 3 or 4 in an aquarium.  There are 119 species of new world monkeys.  How many do you see at the zoo?


  2. There are at least one million species of animals in the world today.  The majority are insects.  Excluding arthropods, there are over 200,000 *known* animal species.  The number of species living in captivity (whether in zoos or aquaria) is probably much less than 10,000.
