  1. FRENCH - Modern English is partly based on French because of the Norman conquest in 1066.  French grammar is the basis for English grammar, so, not only does one learn a foreign language, one learns more about English.  French also helps with English spelling (beautiful..?), and dropping bad habits like ending sentences with a preposition and using "you" instead of "one".  I had a minor in French in college and it was GREAT reading, too (Camus, Sartre).

Spanish is a "practical" choice, but it is easy, especially if one alreadyknowss French.  Why easy..?  Spelling in Spanish is phonetic - nothing to trip up outsiders, like English and French!

  2. If you live in America, for the love of God, learn Spanish.  It's likely in 20 years there will be little to no jobs for those of us who aren't lucky enough to have come from Mexico, already speaking Spanish.  If you live in Canada, French might help you.  It would be nice for you to learn French so when you went to France you would know the language, but a year is not long enough to learn much, it probably wouldn't help you out too much.  Seriously though...learn Spanish.  It is the more practical choice, especially if you live in America where it is just becoming more and more widely used.

  3. since you WANT to learn french you should go with that. all it takes to learn a language is the willingness to learn. and after you learn french, spanish will be so easy to learn because its such a simple language compared to french.

  4. the only good reason to learn spanish is that it's becoming a popular language. but since you are going to france i would suggest you to learn french. btw france is a great place. you'll have fun.

  5. It seems you need to study French as your will need it. Tht´s the main reason. Then, you can think of learning another language.

  6. Spanish obviously. Just look at the statistics. Spanish is spoken by nearly 500 million people worldwide making it one of the most spoken languages in the world. This is a quote from wikipedia on Spanish!

"It is estimated that the combined total of native and non-native Spanish speakers is approximately 500 million, likely making it the third most spoken language by total number of speakers (after English and Chinese)." from wikipedia.org.

French is not as usefull as Spanish in my opinion, unless you are moving to France or Quebec.

  7. Is Brazilian Portuguese an option?  Because if it is, you should pick that language!!  It is easier than french but a bit more challenging than Spanish, plus it is SUCH a beautiful language!!!  (more so than french + spanish combined) :D

  8. It depends on where you live and where you are going.

If you live in America, spanish is a rising language.  More and more people are speaking it.  If you are going into a career being in the public eye [i.e. teacher, nurse, secretary, etc.].  This way you can better market yourself in a resume.

However, if you are going to go overseas and visit France, Canada, Parts of Africa, etc, then French may be for you.

I took french in school, learned it, and I don't regret it.  Pick one and have fun!

  9. Which ever language you want to learn then you make the decisions.  You can take spanish the next following year or so.  I have taken French during middle school and it's really fun.
