  1. It depends on which part of germany you will move to.

in the northern part - plattduetsch

between Duisburg and Dortmund - kohlenpottisch

in the cologne area - koelsch

    near Frankfurt - hessisch

    around Karlsruhe - badenserisch

    near Stuttgart . schwaebisch

    round munich - bayrisch

    near Nuremberg - fraenkisch

    at Vilseck/Grafenwoehr - oberpfaelzisch

round Dresden and Lepzig - saechsisch

    in Berlin - berlinerisch

  2. English is helpful but in everylife situations (supermarket, administration etc.) German is quite helpful. First second language the Germans learn is English, after that French/Latin/Russian then Chinese, Italian, Danish...

  3. Depends on what you want to do.

With German and English you are fine. You don't need another language. Any language could be useful if you want to work for a company that does exports.

  4. How about, hum... German???

It does you no use to learn the dialects. First of all, you might not know where i Germany you're going and once you get there, if you move or travel, others might no be able to speak the dialect.

  5. Learn as much basic German as you can.

In the states we have many language oppourtunities. I was offered Spanish, French, Japanese and yes German in High School and Spanish in Elementary school. However, in Germany they teach english from 1st grade through their equivalent of high school.

If you show an effort to speak their language and include German words in your sentances then they will make the same effort to speak to you in English, the best they can.

  6. German. Duh.

  7. You already gave yourself the answer.

As it's Germany you must speak the German language.

    So easy to explain.

  8. Just besides german and english , nothing. Really ... i would know ... :P

P.S dont listen to LaFeeFan , thats a bunch of hourse **** , im german and been all around germany and all u need is GERMAN and english is helpfull.

There just diferent dialects in the cities but you can still understnad each one of them.

  9. I don't know why Jan's response got rated so low, but it's at least partially true.  I believe most Germans get at least 8 years of English in school though, so most *do* speak English, though it would still be helpful to learn some German.

  10. Your question is obvious and is answered by yourself. German is the language of Germany, although their is a dialect difference form north to south. Learn the dialects and you will do great! Also for those minority peoples in Germany, you could learn Polish for the immigrants in the east and Danish for the Danes living in Schleswig-Holstein. If you know standard German you should do perfect, you don't need to know anything else to live their.

  11. Perhaps it would be a good idea to learn German???!!!

  12. Well...my dear...

With english & german you're in pretty  GOOD  Shape, cause almost everyone speaks english over here !!

Lots of greetings from Germany... Annette****

  13. how about german????

  14. Kisuaheli.

  15. No other language is really necessary besides German. Yes, there are a lot of immigrants from Turkey and Russia, but many of them also learn German once they immigrate to Germany. So with English and German you should be fine.

  16. This sounds like an obviously dumb question. However, it depends on where in Germany you plan on living. In a large city; German and English, in the rural areas; Germany (including the local dialect), In the Saarland; German and French.

In other words, if you are living close to the border with another country learn German and some of the other country's language.

It is always best to try to speak the native language, the local people will respect you more - and definately be more friendly.

  17. Er... GERMAN????

AS you already speak English, it won't be necessary to learn it. German is spoken throughout the whole country, there are no other languages. Only dialects...

  18. french would be a good one
