I'm looking to get a laptop for school but I do have some requirements so I need help! I want something that looks good obviously, and thin but not too thin..I want XP instead of Vista, and I want good memory capacity (1gb or 2?) and a good speed. I want a built-in camera but it's not necessary I guess. I want Microsoft Office already installed on it (and any other programs would be nice, i.g. photoshop) ..And I do not plan on spending more than $1100 on it. Also preferably, a dell, hp, or a sony.... So what do you guys recommend??!

  1. Any new Dell, HP, or Sony will come with Vista pre-installed

So consider getting an Apple MacBook instead. You'll be able to install up to 4 GB of RAM. Speed will be a reasonably fast 2.1Ghz. It will have a built in iSight camera. You will be able to easily install MS Office, Photoshop, and run Widows XP using Boot Camp or other programs. You wont need Norton, since there are no viruses for Macs. As a bonus you will of course have Mac OS X, so you will be able Mac software as well.

Price starts at $1100, but you'll be able to get a $100 student discount, a $300 rebate on an iPod Touch, and a $100 rebate on a printer. If you don't need the iPod or the printer, you'll be able to resell those easily.

So the MacBook will give you everything you are looking for plus a lot more. Its the biggest bang for you bucks if you want to run XP and more.

  2. You won't get XP now. They are out of sale. You can install it if you find an old piece in stock somewhere. Norton... I think you need to install it separately. For college, buy a MacBook or an HP. Hp is better if planning for gaming etc. Vista is good. Also, I recommend at least 2 GB of RAM. CPU should be at least 1.7 GHz, AMD recommended. If gaming, medium to high, buy one with at least 2.0 GHz. Turions are perfect.

Compaqs are good too. Not much different from HP, but cheaper. I recommend. But don't buy one with Vista Basic. Home Premium or Business is perfect for a college student. Ultimate is no-doubt-perfect.

  3. Get a Dell or a HP, those would be the top choices at your preferred price. If you buy a new laptop, you will get Vista instead of XP, that is like a guarantee unless you buy an old laptop. You should use Vista because eventually everyone will switch to Vista just like how everyone switched from Windows 98 to Windows XP. So you should just get used to Vista now.

The new laptops should come with at least 2-3 GB and pretty good speed so you don't have to worry about those. For Microsoft Office, I think all new laptops will only give you a trial version or make you pay for it. Maybe they have changed their policy, who knows.

If you want a Sony, I don't think you would be able to find one at that price. And also, one VERY important thing I recommend for you: don't ever get a laptop that is bigger than 14.1 inch. Because you're going to regret it when you have to carry your laptop around.

  4. HP laptop...

  5. www.dell.com

I recommend a Dell XPS.  Thin, lightweight, and you can customize it to the specs you want exactly!

However you must know that XP is an outdated operating system, and is no longer offered on any new laptops ... you will have to downgrade it yourself and that can be a MAJOR hassle.  Just get used to Vista, you'll have to someday anyways.

  6. macs suck don't get one i'm sorry i ever bought one.
