  3. Hello. I am too starting college and am looking for a laptop. But this is entirely up to you. If you like apples then get an apple. And it also depends what you are going to use it for. Just remember the golden rule

dont get norton it grinds even the most powerfull computers to a halt.

  4. Macs are great for a general user, if you can afford them. It really depends on your needs as to how powerful the computer needs to be. For somewhat intensive graphics/media work (not iMovie, but more like Adobe CS, Logic Studio, 3DS Max/Maya, etc) you need a powerful computer (preferably the best one you can afford). If you just need to take notes and write papers (plus more common uses), you can use any new computer, with any OS (though if you get a cheaper computer that can't run Windows Vista very well, you should use either Windows XP or Linux - see the link at the bottom of the answer). As for software, I'd reccomend (for Windows) any Microsoft Office 2007 package that has OneNote 2007 in it, and use that for taking notes. For OS X I'd also suggest any of the Microsoft Office packages, as it has Entouage, which includes email, project managing, task list, address book, note list, and calendar elements; iWork has no program for any of these tasks. Another thing to consider: Office 2008 will deliver electronic files to a Windows-based computer running Office without a problem, while iWork requires conversion.

As for specific computers, for more media/engineering-oriented education, I'd go with either a powerful PC (x64 is preferable, 4gb memory, >2GHz dual core processor, and NVIDIA/ATI graphics card with at least partially dedicated memory) or a MacBook Pro (4gb of memory, which can be added on your own for much less; I would personally go with 15.4" screen, but the 17" one would work too). For a more "average" education (where a computer would only be used for notes, writing assignments, etc) I'd suggest a less-powerful PC (still dual core, but doesn't need to be above 2GHz; still preferably x64; only 2gb memory for Vista, less needed for XP or Linux, with at least 1gb; pretty much any graphics card will work), or a MacBook of any type.

  5. If i were you i would buy an apple macbook because they come with iLife which has everything microsoft office has, but it comes with it.  Also if you are not that familliar with computers, you should get a macbook because macs are really easy to learn.  But, if you're short on cash, get another laptop like an acer, which are cheaper

    Hope i can help!

  6. I would go with a new Macbook.  This would be great for you because it comes with the iLife suite, which is pretty much Microsoft Office, but free.  Also if you're a student, you get a free iPod with it (you have to pay for it up front, but you get a rebate for it).  Also, the dependability of Mac OS X compared to any Vista machine you get is far greater, that means less of a chance of your final going bye bye on the day you have to turn it in.
