  1. Brisbane is the largest city in Queensland.

Cairns is a city in the north of Brisbane.

Townsville is also a city north of Brisbane.

  2. Brisbane is the closest larger city.

  3. Cairns is a city and gateway to the Great Barrier Reef.

    Adventures out on the reef:

  4. If you think of New York and London as "large cities", there are no large cities near the Barrier Reef [and a good thing too - the pollution would have destroyed it by now, LOL.]

The largest nearby town is Townsville with 143,000 people: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Townsville,...

Cairns has approximately 130,000 people: http://www.eventscairns.com/cairns.html

Bear in mind that large sections of the reef lie a considerable distance off the coast, and Brisbane is hundreds of miles from the southern end of the reef.

  5. I would say Cairns
