What last name is given to those kids who live in an orphanage?

Because somehow they have to be regitered,and since alot of them dont get a chance to be adopted how do hey get a last name ?

  1. Short answer - usually the mother's surname.

    Longer answer - What country are you thinking of? The answer may vary because of that. But in general, kids are put into the care of the state for many reasons. Few kids are simply abandoned as infants with no clue as to who their parents are. Perhaps the parents died or the state had to take the children for abuse or neglect. The idea that most kids don't get adopted (or end up in some kind of more permanent situation like a guardianships) will also vary by country and the child's situation. For instance, infants are more likely to be adopted than teens with mental health issues.


  2. Most children that are not infants will already have a surname.  Most infants unless there is something seriously wrong will be adopted and take the surname of the family that adopted them.
