It's for homework. Im in college and I have to make a trifold learning center for a second grade class. I was just wondering what the center could be about.

  1. I know the poem and story well...a lesson in the beauty of diversity! Here are a few of ideas to get you going. You may be able to build from here...

ART CENTER--- The Beauty of Blending Colors

#1...Put some water color paints on a sheet of paper... Have children use water bottles to spray the sheet. Let them watch as all of the colors run and blend together to make something beautiful.

#2 Version...Paint on wet paper. Get a big sheet of paper completely wet. Dip it right into water in the sink. Then smooth it out on a cookie sheet or plastic tabletop. Brush thick, wet watercolors on top. They blurr and fuzz out on the wet paper, blending together and making wonderful shapes.

    After using either method...

Talk to the children---point out that like the crayons, everyone is different ---but they all blend together in work and play to make the world wonderful.

MAKE A FRIENDSHIP BULLETIN BOARD---"Friendship Comes In Many Colors

    You Need: Paint, Paper

Give children peach, white, brown, black, and orange paint (add soap to make it stain proof). Have them mix what they perceive their skin color to be. Then have them paint a friend's hand ---and then put the print on a  heart shaped piece of paper. When all is done...you can put these on a bulletin board with the heading, "Friendship Comes in Many Colors"

    SCIENCE CENTER

A simple project can demonstrate the beauty of diversity! Gather seeds of different kinds and invite each student to plant a variety of seeds in an egg carton.

The seeds of different shapes, sizes, and colors will sprout side by side. (Just like people of different countries, races, and religions living together in harmony)  Once the plants are large enough, transplant them into a large pot in the classroom or in a small garden outside. If you do this project with some of the other classes, it would culminate in the creation of a beautiful, colorful, and diverse school wide garden!

There is also the "TRADITIONAL CRAYON BOX PROJECT"

Visit the "Multi-Cultural Thread" of my website:http://www.after-school-care.com/Replies... and look at post #12...it's a project that traditionally goes with the poem/story!

If you want something simple--using crayons---

tape three crayons together and have the children draw. You could also do melted crayon drawings, scratch art, etc.

Hope this is what you're after--if you use any of it--make it your own--make it better! :-)

  2. I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "what learning centers".  Could you give a little more detail?  Usually preschools have learning centers in place and do not create them for a specific book or theme.  However, good programs will change what is in them.  Maybe you could use a "crayon theme" for each of your learning centers.  I'll check back...If this is what you mean I'll take a bit more time to be specific about what you could do at each center.
