Several reasons such as huge debt, the growth of enlightenment philosophy, a rise in food prices, the resistance of the nobility, and clergy toward any tax increases led to the French revolution. All of these factors destabilized the Ancien Regime and increased the power of the commoners.

Most especially, the huge debt were incurred to support the American Revolution and it weakened the financial power of the government and forced it to ask for higher taxes. This enraged the commoners, who constituted the vast majority of the population, and eventually led to the French Revolution.
