Question:

What legal name change procedure do i need if my UK BANK has gotten my surname and middle name mixed up?

i'm a chinese singaporean who just moved to London. my singaporean passport has my name in this format: "FirstName FamilyName ChineseName" and so when i subsequently got bank accounts here in the UK, the cretins at two of the banks INSISTED on printing my name as "FirstName CHINESENAME" because my (anglicised) chinese name was the last word (hence the "last" name) in my passport. this was despite the fact that I explained to them that Last Name had to be FamilyName!

so... both my cards now says "Miss D D Meimei"

(meimei is obviously my first name in chinese)

well done, HSBC and Natwest......

what legal name change is appropriate for this situation? what paper do i need to prove that my "middle name" was actually my surname?

i'm concerned cos i can't sign up for things like paypal and i have a feeling that this confusion between the order of words in my name might be a problem in future for other really official things.

  1. Do you have any documentation in your full name. Eg passport, birth certificate etc. You might be able to write to them and state that that is how things are done in Singapore and they should accept it. You should send it to the bank in writing or request to speak to the manager.

You might be able to get a change of name done via deed poll but I'm not sure if you would be able to get this done if you're not British.

  2. Talk to the bank manager and show them certified documents like your driver's license from your country, birth certificate, and passport on how your name should be. They can help you better in person. This question should really be posted in "Business and Finance" not "Immigration".
