  1. my buddy is 6'4 - 6'5 he's riding Mickey Munoz 11' surftech epoxy board. That would be a good board to start on. A little pricey though. I recommend bigger and lighter boards. Just because a traditional longboard is tiring to paddle around in the surf, especially when you are just starting out.

On the other hand I ride a 7'6" hollow core wooden board that I shaped and glassed myself last summer. I'm 6'2" 325lbs. It's all about volume and displacement when you are starting out. look for boards over 3 inches thick. And preferably epoxy so you won't dent the h**l out of them with your heels.

As you get better everything changes, or stays the same. It just becomes more about preference.

  2. If you are just learning, I would recommend a long board. For a big dude like you, we are talking about something in the 9'plus range, real wide, around 22/23" on a nice fat blank (3" thick). I am 5'10", 220 lbs (yes, that is called fat.. I surf best at about 200 lbs, but I have gotten lazy this winter). I ride boards from 9'4" to 7'8", but I've seen lots of big guys rippin' on boards in the 6' range - however, they are very experienced, and VERY good.

Go to a real surf shop (not a bathing suit store that sells some surfboards) and talk to the folks there. They will hook you up with some lessons, and the right board for your size, beginner skill level and the type of waves at the local break(s) you will be surfing at.  Don't buy anything too expensive. as  you get better, you will undoubtedly want to change up, almost everybody does (I have been surfing since '66, and I ride three different boards). Check the link for some good info on some junk NOT to buy.Go for it! Surfing is the greatest stoke of all.

  3. Since your just starting out, in order to develop you  " sea legs ", try a board between 8'4"  to  8'7" ( that should be easier for you to paddle ), around 3 inches thick, flatter bottom with turned down rails, and a softer tail radius ( round tail as opposed to a pin tail ). You should have fun with a stick like that in most surfing conditions.
