  1. The first response pretty much summed it up.

Definately go with at least some knowledge.  When you get there, do all you can to learn the language.   If you work at it every day and practice you'll be pretty good after 6 months and much better after a year.

It is you that wants to live in an area where the populace speaks another language.  Therefore it is you who must adapt to them, not the other way around.  The French don't like it when people expect them to know their language.  But if you are humble and at least attempt to speak their language they will treat you nicely.  After all - what do Americans say to immigrants that move to the US?  We tell them to learn English!  We don't want bilingual schools or States to have any other language as their official language but English.  Why should you expect any less from the French?

  2. some people do it with no knowledge, and don't even try to learn when they are there. I don't know how they do all the administrative bit.

I'd recomment a basic level when you get there, then carry on learning to involve yourself in the community.

Your question about the French people speaking good English is hard, but I'd say less than 10per cent.

  3. That depends on what you intend to do when you get there. Obviously, if you want to work then fluency in French is essential. If, on the other hand, you are, for example, an artist who wishes to live in Paris and simply enjoy the ambiance then you need not know much, if any, French.

In a survey, conducted by French market research institute IFOP for the weekly newspaper Dimanche Ouest, 12% said they were fluent in English, 6% said they understood and spoke it well, and 48% said they "more or less" understood English but did not speak it fluently. Put another way, only 34% said they didn't speak English at all.

In major tourist areas, such as Paris, almost everyone in the service industry speaks at least some English.

  4. How can you answer two questions at the same time ? -

If you're basic no problem - and if you have  $ absolutely no problem !!!

Concerning french you'd probably be jealous of the level some of them have acquired - but to meet them is another question

By the way "beauty" and "brunette" are two french words - you know and use a mass of french words that you do not know that you know

Thanks for the thumb - I'd like to answer something - statistics are liers - your question is in fact " what percentage of french speak english, in the places where as a stranger I'll need to be understood - in that case the reply is : 100% most of the time, in a widely sufficient english

  5. It depends how clever you are I moved to France a few years back and knew know french at all but I was surrounded by French people who didn't speak English and ended up Fluent I can now speak French perfectly and sometimes say stuff in french rather than in English by mistake

I am good at languages though and pick up things quickly and easily and if I learn something once and really well it stays in my head so if you are the same you'll be fine but if you aren't then you are screwed its tuff trust me I have been through it

Most French people can't speak a word of english, if you are moving somewhere quite rural the likeliness of people speaking good english is 1 to 100 but if you are moving somewhere built up it would probably be 2 in 10

    Hope this helps

  6. Most younger french people do speak English but it is respectful for you to have a little knowledge of French too. If you were living there you would learn really fast though. I speak at a moderate level in French but when I was there it was like instinctual or something because you have to be able to read signs and such. It really is not as hard as you would think. I was there for 2 weeks 4 years ago and have wanted to go back ever since.
