What level of pianist am I?

Question

I have never had a piano teacher and just started seriously learning piano by myself a year ago. So far I can play:

Beethoven -Moonlight Sonata

Beethoven - Fur Elise

Yiruma - Kiss the rain

Chopin - Nocturne op 9 no 2

Liszt - Consolation no 3

Also, bits and pieces of Chopins other nocturnes, Liszt's hungarian rhapsodies, and Debussy's claire de lune.

What level would you suggest I am?

Heyy, Moonlight Sonata is one of my favorite piano songs :) That's not easy to play! My friend can play that and he's been playing keyboard about a year, with a teacher!

Fur Elise is, again, not easy to play either. I would call you intermediate.

I am a piano competition judge in NY.  First of all, someone who is an expert would have to HEAR you play - just because you can slog your way through these works, does not mean you know them at the level of skill and interpretation that would put you as an equal to another player.  Also, your level includes you ability to play scales in various configurations and octaves, all with proper fingering, and at certain tempo standards.  And sight-reading is a factor - moving forward with the intention of minimal errors, while maintaining a steady pulse and tempo.

I trust that by Moonlight sonata, you are talking about the FIRST movement.  Turn the page, and let us know how well you can play the rest of the piece.  Listen to true artists play all of the works you have cited - do you compare at all to them om accuracy and tempo?  Let's back it up - see if you can find fine level players on YouTube - not some kid slobbering through there, because God knows I hear plenty of THAT in my business.

Since you admit to NO teacher, this is why I am SO VERY skeptical.  Post a YouTube of yourself playing, and those of us who are in a professional position to judge can be of more assistance to you.

I've been playing piano for years. it depends on the version. Are you playing the real versions of those? or lower versions? if its the real versions i would say a 6 or 6.5 out of 10. if a lower version very much less then that.
