What life is like in Jackson, Mississippi ?

I have been reading most of the comments on the Clarion Ledger, Jackson's newspaper, and it seems that the city needs help. From these comments, I noticed that...

1. Most people in Jackson, MS are scared to visit the local zoo because it is surrounded in a crime-infected area.

2. Jackson, MS is a rundown city.

I wondered are these comments over-blown or factual. Nevertheless, I would like to see that the city be improved in the future. Also, I wondered how would a person from Chicago, IL would fit in Jackson, MS.

They'd fit in fine with a bullet-proof vest. It's not that bad yet but we've had 45+ homicides already this year in the Jackson area. Two convenience store clerks have killed would be robbers in the past week alone.

I'd love to see Jackson improve too but don't think it will happen until crime is under control and I don't see that happening in the poorest state in the US. Sad to see it that way.
