  1. I don't think the USA has deliberately forced its life-style on any other nation. But both its leaders and its people do seem to have the naive idea that because "the American way" suits USA living, it is automatically the best way for other countries and cultures.

The USA has used it's economic and military power to encourage and protect capitalism, consumerism, and evangelism around the world with considerable success. However, it has failed to recognise how small a sector of the population benefit from these policies, and you can see the bewilderment on her diplomats faces (particularly GWB's) when a significant part of the world rises up and protests USA benefit/intervention.

  2. Are we talking about the embargo on Cuba?

  3. DDT could prevent millions of deaths per year, but overeager environmentalists led a ban on the stuff.  As an insecticide (that means POISON) it isn't such bad stuff.

condoms/family planning - can't use US money for these, so the poorest in the poor nations continue to spread disease and have kids they cannot afford.

OK.  The libs should hate the DDT comment & the conservative the condoms comment.  Anyone else I can offend?

  4. USA in its demand for cheaply made goods has ruined the air quality in China.. and has forced millions of people to work in horrid conditions.. people who used to be farmers are now selling their kids to work in factories making stuff for Americas..

people are also selling their kids to brothels (india, china, hong kong) etc. that are often visited by Americans...

Americans are flying to China to buy "organs" harvested from prisioners..

bascially wealth cannot exist without poverty so I am saying that by getting rich and powerful USA has deprived other countries..

Americans have displaced many people in island nations - by demanding the nicest spots for hotels..and sending tourists to the nice locations the locals are forced away - thus causing alot of hatred for Americnas in some island nations...

  5. MacDonalds.

  6. MandB, who told you the global economy is a zero-sum game or that the US 'forces' China to do anything? Do you realize that people stand in line for hours to get one of those horrid jobs since it means they can feed their families and stop living like a 13th century peasant. And don't buy into every urban myth you hear, you do understand that for an organ transplant a tissue match is essential, you can't just pick someone at random and expect their kidneys to be accepted by your immune system.

Have you traveled to an island nation and witnesses this hatred? Other than Haiti, every island I've been to seems to greatly appreciate the infusion of so much hard currency and they'd be very unhappy if the hotels closed and the tourists stopped visiting. Don't get all your economics information from the back of a pamphlet someone left behind on the city bus, that's not how the world works.

As to the original question, the US has forced more than one country to adopt democracy which isn't a natural state. We've also insisted that invading countries like Iraq leave other countries alone, like Kuwait.

We also got pretty firm with the fascist states of the Axis Powers in WWII and forced them to stop murdering innocent people. Free inoculations have interfered in life or death issues involving countless diseases, we helped to keep hundreds of millions of people from suffering under Communist rule, too.

It sounds like whoever asked this question has a preconceived notion of the answer he wants, namely to make the US out to be a colonial power intent on forcing everyone to bow to us. Sorry, I can't help you write fiction like that.
