There is only one species of lion, Panthera leo, but there are several subspecies, including the Masai lion (P.l. massaicus), Transvaal lion (P.l. krugeri), Barbary lion (P.l. leo), Senegalese lion (P.l. senegalensis) and Asiatic lion (P.l. persica - the only subspecies to be found outside Africa). The Barbary lion is the largest subspecies, but is believed to be extinct in the wild. There is a captive population, however.
