  1. Contact lens solutions are not actually required to be tested on animals, though they commonly are.  Contact lenses themselves are all tested on animals, to the best of my knowledge.  If you're really determined to avoid products tested on animals, stick with your glasses.

There are two companies that I know of that do not test on animals.  These are Lobob Laboratories and Clear Conscience.

Lobob Laboratories allows you to order on-line, and lists a few common stores where you can but it locally:  http://www.loboblabs.com/index3.html

Clear Conscience does as well, and includes a store-finder on their website to find a local source:  http://www.clearconscience.com/

  2. Being as contact lens solutions are used on human eyes, initial tests of the product have to be done on living tissue to get accurate results.

The solutions are tested on rabbits eyes. There is no cruelty involved in doing that.

Certain tests are done by placing lenses on the rabbits also to see if they will stay moist and bacteria free for normal wearing times on humans.

The rabbits are healthy and well taken care of to ensure that the eyes also stay healthy so that the results are as accurate as possible on healthy living tissue.

Any product that can directly affect human health has to be tested first. That doesn't mean there has to be any cruelty involved.

Every solution on the market will have had to be approved only after meeting certain criteria, which involves live tissue tests.

You can feel ok about contact solutions...they have no reason to harm the rabbits, they need them to be healthy.
