  1. The major thing you need is a lot of money- with that you can hire engineers.  Any startup is going to be very demanding, and it is a crowded industry- hard to make money at it- so it will take a long time to turn profitable.  10% margins in aircraft manufacturing are considered outstanding results.

But hey if it's your passion and you have the capital, GO FOR IT!!

  2. You can major in any subject you like; engineering or accounting and finance would probably be the most relevant.  The main thing you will need is a talent for raising money.  You would need to put together at least a couple of billion US dollars to start a company building small airplanes.  To break into the airliner market, expect to need at least $100 billion or so.

It is rarely profitable, and your most likely outcome is bankruptcy, if not federal prison.

Business leaders have no private life.  You will eat, sleep, and breathe your entrepreneurial effort 24/7 until you die.

  3. Who do you think you are? William E. Boeing!?

No offense or anything Zak, but I can assure you that if you want to start a company that builds planes, it will have to be paper planes.

There is no-one going to overpower Airbus or Boeing.

But good luck in whatever you do decide to do though, be it successfully, or unsuccessfully.

  4. Hey people, ease up a little! Not everyone wants to necessarily play in the same league as Airbus and Boeing.

There's a lot of room for innovative energetic companies in the entry level aircraft manufacturing sector.

Now to answer the question: A degree in business would be a good idea. Engineering too.

  5. Economics. Then you'll see why it's a bad idea.

  6. You don't need any formal qualifications to begin any type of business. Most importantly you need experience, knowlege and sufficient funding.

    Good luck.

  7. I'd start with aerospace engineering. Then tacking on a business degree will be really helpful if you want to start your own company. If you start selling planes though, make sure to hire a lawyer first to make sure you get your liability and insurance in order.

Not to get you down, but it will cost A LOT of money to do something like this, so you might plan to work for another aircraft company first for a while to get a lay of the land and build up some funds. Meanwhile you can work on building support for your future company and getting investors.

  8. all you need is enginerring and business

I would reccomend for you to

-go to a scrap yard and get cheap parts for a plane

    -build a 2 seater for $2,000

-Sell it for $4000 on like craigslist.com

-Keep doing until you can start making jets and so on and so on

  9. I second the answer put forth by SketchyB.  That said, another place you should visit is the Experimental Aircraft Association located in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.  Plan your visit during AirVenture.  URL listed below.  There you can see and meet with many, many people in the Aviation Industry.  Then you will see what you will need to make your dream come true.

Second URL below is for a very popular kit plane company called Van's Aircraft. Very good airplane and quite popular.  This company is located Aurora, Oregon.  There is a large community dedicated to the planes offered by Vans.  Could provide you with information on what is needed to even offer to the public an experimental class aircraft.

    Good Luck

  10. You only need a heart, determination, and the ability to tell the world confidently you believe in yourself. The owner of JetBlue, which I cannot remember his name at the time, has NO college degree - just faith. It will take as much time from your life as you allow, and will grow only with how much you put into it. Trust in yourself and those who are willing to work with you, and you can go miles. Best of luck, take care and God Bless!

  11. If you want more information you should contact people who work for the worlds largest aircraft manufacturers-Boeing and Airbus. Look them up online.
