I want to go to graduate school and get a masters in something else other than my field. I majored in Criminal Justice at Illinois State University and would like to get a different job. I thought about going into accounting or finance but have not had a class as an undergrad and thought it would be too difficult with all the other professionals attending grad school and I am learning the basics through graduate school. What is a good major for me that won't be near impossible to do in graduate school? I had a 3.34 GPA and was on the honor roll at Illinois State University......

  1. Why not Law?

Finance would mean getting an MBA.  There is no problem with your undergraduate major there  -- but they want you to have three to five years of work experience.  Plus, having gone to a school like Illinois State would make it difficult to get into a top tier B-School with your GPA.

You could get into lots of MA programs -- but you would probably have to settle for a second or third tier school.

Honestly -- Law would be your best bet.

  2. Don't worry about doing a graduate program that's different from your undergrad degree.  My BA is in religious studies, and now I'm working on a masters in biology.  I haven't had any problems at all even though at lot of the other students majored in biology.  Remember it's not a competetion with the other students!!

  3. If you have a background in criminal justice, you would be right on track for a masters degree in psychology or sociology. If it is accounting or finance that you want, though, go for it! People come to masters programs from all sorts of backgrounds.
