  1. Depends on what you want to do.  English if you want to Teach, Journalism if you want to go into news.  Minor same thing depends.  Some type of education for teaching and communications for news.

  2. I believe that English would be a more useful and versital degree. I was a communications major, and I have had a very easy time finding a job because of it. Even if your job isn't directly related to communications, employers will take it into consideration, because it is important to be able to communicate with customers regardless of your field. If you are thinking of going into the educational field, communication is key to teaching your students effectively. Marketing is also a good minor. Companies are always looking for new ideas to promote their products.

  3. I wouldn't dig print's grave just yet. Online news really is still in its infancy, and there is a lot of irresponsible journalism there. There is a lot of opinion masquerading as fact. There will always be a demand for great investigative journalists.

That being said, a journalism degree is OK, but you might want to consider it as a minor. A lot of news outlets like to see other types of degrees -- it gives you an edge in reporting on topics within the area of your study.

Most journalists are not reporting about journalism; they're reporting about businesses, schools, government, science. Thus, degrees in those areas are good. If you have one of those degrees but no journalism degree, the newspaper is full of people who can help train you in writing.

A journalism degree can be good in other fields, too, such as public relations. Your PR boss wants to know that you understand the media and know how to format your copy to improve your chances of getting your press releases published.

As for good pairings, you see a lot of political science degrees coupled with journalism because so much of journalism is reporting about government.

A better pairing might be a foreign language. The Hispanic population is soaring in America, but any foreign language is good. Japanese and Middle East languages are marketable.

If you have the brains, degrees related to the medical field are also marketable in journalism.

In teaching, I think an English degree is better. Some states/schools won't let you teach English with just a journalism degree, but they'll let you teach journalism with just an English degree.
