What majority of the House & Senate is held by Democrats?

What amount of seats are needed to have a controlling vote in each? Is it true that Democrats don't hold a ruling majority? What power does the simple majority carry?

they do in the house, but not in the senate... it's like 51-48-1 and you need 60 votes if I remember correctly...
