Question:

What make of used car is the most reliable?

I currently have a 96 Toyota Corolla with 225,000 miles on it...

But all of a sudden it needs repairs that make it not worthwhile to fix (engine seal, transmission bearings)

I dont want another 96 corolla for obvious reasons (they would all have lots of miles) - what makes and specific models that have been made since then would you suggest? And how many miles would I expect on an engine of that age? (guestimates)

I'm hoping to spend 5-8 grand for something used....

Thanks

  1. I'm not sure exactly what type but i know Fords usually are cheap

  2. Toyota

    Honda

    Acura

    Dodge

    thats what i think

  3. I would go with a Honda or Toyota. You can find some with fewer miles on them. I currently drive a 97 Honda CR-V with 130k miles and have had no problems. You do have to search for them. Everyone I've known with older used Hondas or Toyotas have been satisfied with their purchase. Take the time and look around.

If you're able to pay cash, don't be afraid to talk to dealerships into lowering the price drastically. We've done that successfully 2x now (earlier this year we got the CR-V out to door for 2k less than list price - which would have had extra fees), but you do have to be willing to walk out the door if they won't meet the price you're willing to pay.

  4. I would say the most reliable used cars makes are Honda and Toyota and Nissan also Mazda.

  5. You can probably get a 2000-2002 Honda Civic for about 8K. A Ford Focus (2004 or later) might also be do-able, as would a Hyundai Elantra (2004 or later). These cars were recommended by Consumer Reports as good used car best bets.
