Chess is an art in the same sense that boxing can be considered an art.

Chess is an art in the sense that a good player will know in advance how an opponent will react to his moves.  The art of chess, like boxing, is to provoke your opponent to move in ways that will benefit you.  In other words, know where your opponent is going to be before he does and have your punch ready to meet him when he gets there.  The better a player is at this the more of an artist he becomes whether it is in boxing or in chess.

"TLP8311" above is right about the "immortal game".  There is also a very good book called The Immortal Game that I would recommend.  It covers the above mentioned game move-by-move while at the same time gives you a very interesting and detailed history of chess.  You can get the book at Barnes & Noble.

"Art" is a VERY subjective term...

There's a certain skill and beauty to a really well played chess game ... being able to move against the pieces on the board as well as the player behind them... knowing how to play them to your best advantage... setting traps... making counter moves... thinking so many moves ahead... etc., etc., etc.

Someone who understands Chess can appreciate the art involved. A chess master like a master painter must spend years of study and practice perfecting his technique.  Chess is a game of infinite possibilities and a chess masters art is in the creation of concepts and the brilliant application of theory in new ways or in finding the hidden possibilities on the chess board.  Because Chess has its own language (chess notation) brilliant games of high artistic value can be enjoyed by untold generations.;  attached is a link to the Immortal Game watch and the game will play out before your eyes.  This game was played over 150 years ago and still appreciated by chess players the world over.
