What makes Rory McIlroy stand out among big names?
Rory McIlroy is famous partly because of his US Open win in the 2011 season and partly because of his current 3rd position in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR).
McIlroy has been amazing throughout his career but his most spectacular performance was witnessed last year at the congressional Country Club where he won the US Open by eight shots.
The Northern Irishman is certainly one of the most influential players in the world. Although he could not snatch the top spot in the world rankings, he has much to boast about.
Last year, he had a tough face-off with Englishman Luke Donald. He and Donald were jockeying for the 1st position in the Race to Dubai.
Donald, however, won the Race to Dubai that typically culminated in the Dubai World Championship.
McIlroy was left regretting his mistakes but he soon pushed the persistent worries out of his mind and focused on the tasks at hand.
2012 brought plenty of challenges for the young Irishman. His first assault was seen in the Dubai Desert Classic, where he recorded his 8th top-5 finish, but could not do much to bolster his world ranking.
Keeping in mind his super skills on the course, his fans have always been interested in knowing what makes the 22-year-old star stand out among the big names in golf.
His muscularity has always attracted avid golf followers. However, the US Open winner is keen to point out that his built has nothing to do with what he does on the course.
Nonetheless, he says there are many things about him people love to know. Being down-to-earth and upfront is all he can count on when it comes to dealing with people.
He said, "I have always said I will try to answer questions honestly. I don't want to change that about myself. I think people appreciate that about me".
McIlroy’s brief stint is full of surprises and achievements. He remained resilient right from the start and made a name for himself on the back of his hard work.
Born in Holywood, Northern Ireland, in May 1989, McIlroy discovered his talents in golf early in his childhood.
He started swinging clubs on the course when he was only a kid. In one of his interviews, the Irishman said his biggest mentor was his father, who would spend hours with him on the practice range.
He started his amateur journey at the age of 15. His first victory was racked up at the Junior Ryder Cup in 2004. He then proved his worth in the Walker Cup in 2007.
His performance was appreciated by several analysts, who had already pinned high hopes on him.
He also represented his country at the Eisenhower Trophy in 2006 and racked up five titles that also included the European amateur Championship in the same year
Turning pro in September 2007, McIlroy set his priorities and started focusing on winning a big event.
Forging ahead with consistency and vigor, young McIlroy recorded his first pro victory in the Dubai Desert Classic in February 2009. This was his first ever triumph on the U.S. circuit.
He kicked off his 2012 season with clear goals in his mind, but unfortunately could not do what he wished to.
He had to see a let-down when he saw Rafael Cabrera-Bello walk away with the prestigious title at the Dubai Desert Classic.
McIlroy said he was saddened by not finishing the tournament atop the leaderboard. “[I’m] a little disappointed, considering the position I was in going into the weekend,” he said later. “I think all the damage was done [on Saturday]”.
However, he said that there are more events coming ahead and he will do his best to improve his ranking. Only time will tell whether the young star will make his wishes come true.
