to the U.S. and Britain??? As I read the article, it appears that 'recognition' should read...annexation of the Georgia territory by Russia. Why, then, is it called recognition; which connotes: we perceive you as your own territory. What the heck happened here? Wags and pundits, it is now your turn. Thank you for taking the time to provide rational, practical and fair minded opines.

  1. So let me get this straight b/c Britain and US said Kosovo has the right to be free, it is 'recognition', but S.O. & Abkhazia, who themselves have overwhelmingly voted for independence, is automatically annexation. So in other words it is only acceptable if Bush says so!

Let dispel some myths first. The first one US some how cares for democracy or for Kosovo, which was nothing more than a political stunt. Do you see Bush condemning Egypt, Jordan, S.Arabia, Algeria, Ethiopia, Uzbekistan . . . fact is US has aided and backed one of the most corrupt regimes in history and still does.

Then Since when is Georgia a democracy??? It is corrupt and totalitarian regime, no better than Russia. Saakashvilli himself is embroiled in corruption scandals. The elections were rigged.

S.O. and Abkhazia have nothing in common with Georgia. There language is different, culture is different. In 1996 they overwhelmingly voted for independence. Today everyone is over the moon there. They see Georgia in the same way Georgia sees Russia.

So Georgia trying to kill innocent civilians was acceptable? No doubt Russia has interest there, and majority of S.O. hold Russian citizenship, but that means there should be no condemnation of Georgia. So Russia should've let Georgians kill everyone in S,O., who actually attacked S.O. backed by US.

So suddenly US and Georgia have good intentions for S.O. You do know when the skirmishes between S.O. and Georgia started, Russia in the security council called for immediate end to hostilities and and called for a peaceful solution. It was US and UK that refused!

It is simply about control, especially over Caspian OIL, plain and simple! US has done everything to provoke Russia when there is no need, Russia has in turn retaliated and made it clear they will protect their interests. It is US that is trying to provoke another cold war, when there is no need - and simply can not afford it.

Bush was very adamant that S.O. and Abkhazia will remain part of Georgia and the whole world is clear on it. Well where is the whole world?

The fact is simple to control Caspian OIL is not a reason to provoke another cold war.

"By declaring the Caucasus, a region that is thousands of miles from the American continent, a sphere of its 'national interest,' the United States made a serious blunder."

  2. First thing this is hard Im pro Georgian !

ok first thing I do not think that independece for the two republics is a bad thing it could limit Russia's influence over Georgia so I guess its acceptable ! However strange Russia is not a country known from Peace keeping and since when they recognise independence of rebbelious republic now isnt that strange ? Anybody remembers Chechenya I think the problem was the same as Georgia had with these two republics. Didnt Russia used its military in the same manner Georgia did against South Ossetia ? Becuse for me it seems similiar !

Second What happend to the South Ossetian goverment didnt heard from it since the begining of the war !  Its  quite strange for a goverment to dissapear in the war time we know Russian Peace keepers been there ! I remember an Lithuanian poll made in the time's of  the second World War  it was made with support of USSR and later Lithuania joined the USSR quite a councidence ! Isnt  it today we have Russian Peacekeepers  and South Ossetian People happy to join with mother Russia !! Sounds fishy to me I wonder if Russia's only enemy was Georgia in this war !!!!

  3. Boarders are artificial, randomly created by mindless people so called leaders.

  4. The haters might equate this to Iraq or Kosovo, but you are dead on the money, this is nothing more than a grab for territory by the Russians.  Iraq is now an independent country with a freely elected government.  Kosovo is now an independent country with a freely elected government.  South Ossetia is now a state in Russia, along with a chunk of real estate that used to be the Georgian border.

  5. Russia recognized the territories to spite the West. That's why it is considered unacceptable.

The majority of the people in the two territories wanted to be a part of Russia rather than a part of Georgia in the first place. As a step in accomplishing this, they decided to become independent. No one recognized them as independent until now.

  6. Reminds me of the Peoples Republic Of China 'Recognizing' Taiwan as 'free'.

  7. I think Canada should recognize the Republic of Minnesota and the Republic of North Dakota.....That OK with you?
