  1. Steve Irwin was a showman. An alright bloke manufactured into an eco-Dundee for the US market. He wasn't your typical, unique Australian man. Just a guy who was interested in conservation, liked animals and (totally unnecessarily, for his causes) threw the crocs around like a tough crazy guy to make good TV. Whatever...

Now the BUSHTUCKER MAN... he was COOL. If I was wandering the outback, he'd be much better company and a reliable meal ticket.

And if you're traveling rough, you'd be lucky to run into the BUSH MECHANICS:

  2. I personally thought he fit the American perception of Australians- and thats why he was SO massively popular. I think maybe the US wanted to believe that there is some kind of caricatured bush-man icon.

But Steve Irwin has the amazing respect of so many Australians today because of the honest, unrelenting love he had for the country and for all the unique animals within it. I never liked the show, and thought he was a bit over the top- but I was horrified when he died because I know what an ambassador and all the effort he put into animal conservation and education. A patriotic love to better Australia is what made him an icon, I think.

    Hope that helps!

  3. I think you mean what MADE him so uniquely australian as he is dead

  4. Er, not much.

Where I am in Australia, not many people liked him.  A few didn't even know of him.  Many people think he was a terrible ambassador for Australia.  The main thing he did was his animal work, but unfortunately he will always be remembered by some Aussies as the guy that fed a croc with his baby in his hand.

Are you American?  They seem to think all Aussies are like him now.

  5. there was a man called Irwin,

ladies found him quite a dish,

    he knew everything about Crocodiles,

but absolutely f... all about fish!

ps. He was my hero, so don't take this little ditty the wrong way!

  6. Steve Irwin was so uniquely Australian because, he was Australia's icon, he talked like an Australian with all the slang he used, he helped and cared for Australian and many other wildlife, and he was just adored by us.

  7. cos he used to wear stupid clothes and talk stoopid too

  8. a lot of americans think all australians are like Steve

    they aren't.

just like a lot of australians think americans are like (name some celebrity from america)

  9. No disrespect to the Irwins, but

ummm, he was famous in the us first because he used slang etc that few aussies use anymore (unless you're a dinky di queenslander).

he got on my nerves and I found him embarrassing, his daughter is a chip off the old block and just as annoying.

    rip
